Which Came First? – Part Two

souffle

Last time I shared some recipes, I rolled out my favourite chicken recipes from Epicurious. Today, I give you our favourite egg recipes, mostly from Daddy’s collection, and it seems he’s been holding out on me!

Bread Pudding Soufflé with Whiskey Sauce

What the what? This sounds ridcu-awesome, and I want to eat it right now. This is definitely not gluten-free, and really heavy on the booze, New Orleans’ style.

Lemon Curd Mousse Cake

Here’s another one that I need to taste. I think the crust would be relatively easy to make gluten-free, and this recipe looks easy and delicious!

Lemon Crème Brûlée with Fresh Berries

This is a delicious and simple crème brûlée, and you won’t be disappointed.

Ginger and Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée

I first tasted this at the end of a painstakingly-prepared Thai meal. It is hands down the best crème brûlée I’ve ever tasted.

Quiche au Fromage

Quiche is always a crowd pleaser, and makes for a fantastic, simple week night meal. Our kids love it, and we can send it for lunch the next day.

Scrambled Eggs with Leeks and Fava Beans

We served this fresh and delicious dish at our Spring Equinox brunch, and I’m glad I kept a little dish for leftovers because it was devoured. Despite the fancy additions, the kids devoured it. I think it was because of the crusty parmesan dusting on top.

Curried Pea Frittata with Fresh Tomato Chutney

I’m so glad I found this one again because I’m totally going to make it next week using peas and tomatoes from my garden. It’s mild and simple and perfect with a few dashes of siracha sauce.

Dutch Baby

This is so simple and the variations are endless. We’ve made sweet (and you can add vanilla or cinnamon or nutmeg) and savory versions, and they are always so yum.

For a small-medium (8-10″) cast iron pan or baking dish:

4 eggs
1/2 C flour
1/2 C milk
2Tb butter
pinch of salt

For a 12″ pan, use 1.5 x these ingredients:

6 eggs
3/4 C flour
3/4 C milk
3Tb butter
bigger pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 425, heat pan, melt butter, put batter in (we blend it in our Blentec first), bake for 20-25 until puffed and brown. Take to table quickly for maximum effect!
This recipe is easy to scale up for bigger pans. Cast iron isn’t necessary but it’s best for brown even crust.

Topping ideas are many, of course, but the traditional German version (Dutch probably comes from the word Deutsche)  is lemon and icing sugar.

I hope you like these! Do let me know if you come up with any delicious variations!

Back in Action

You may have noticed that I’ve been very negligent about posting. My schedule got a bit hectic, and I was offline for most of the week before last completing a driver’s ed crash course with a room full of teenagers. Then, last week we had swim lessons every morning. I missed my day at mom’s dedicated to work, and everything bloggy fell by the wayside.

I suppose I could have found the time to write, and I know I would have had back up from my partners for this, but I will admit that I fell into a little bit of a funk. Sometimes I get caught in this yucky head space where I feel like I really don’t have anything important to say, and I start to think that this whole blog business is masturbatory fluff. It becomes impossible to feel motivated to write, and when I try that doubtful voice in my head is louder than any ideas I might have for posts.

So, what changed? Well, I took my hump day trip to mom’s for one. I have ten hours of mostly uninterrupted writing/working time so  I can create posts for the entire week. My big motivation came from Google though. Back when I re-launched this blog under the Playboy Mommy moniker, I was a disappointing page seven with Google search. Now, I’ve shot up to page one! Thank you for visiting and helping move things to critical mass.

There are at least two hundred of you who are reading every time I post, and I hope to see that number multiply, but I’m so grateful for your interest and support. I really do mean it when I say I want to write for you, so I hope you’ll keep sending me ideas for posts you’d like to read.

Meanwhile, let’s take a quick look at some of my favourite photos from my phone since we last met. This is a little journalistic idea that I borrowed from the wonderful Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. These photos were chosen for the memories they evoke, and not necessarily for their awesome composition. That’s Mama S’ department!

We just woke up and feel as grainy as this photo looks.

Playing Hair Salon

I’ve been spoiled, living in the city for so long. One of the only things I would drop some significant coin on was my hair, and I’ve been lucky to have a good friend as my hair stylist/colorist for the last several years. I was seriously fretting about this when I knew we would be moving.

I know lots of people have success with drug store hair dye, but I have never been one of those people, and as a Leo I’m fairly vain about the mane. I finally bit the bullet and bought a couple of boxes of some Garnier product, but those boxes have sat in my closet because I just couldn’t bring myself to try them.

Mama S ventured first into the self-hair-dye experimental foray, and her efforts didn’t work. She got some decent root coverage, but her grey remained untouched by the L’Oreal stuff she purchased. She later confessed that she rinsed it out early because the fumes were so strong she feared she would be left blinded, albeit with great hair.

Enter eSalon.

Our proximity to the US border here in Niagara is certainly one of the greatest things about our new address. We’ve maintained a UPS Store mailbox in Niagara Falls, NY for years now, and these days it’s a half hour trek away. Shopping is a breeze, and so is gaining access to numerous US sites that refuse to ship to Canada.

Mama S discovered eSalon and excitedly sent me a link, and I feel it is my god-given duty to share this gem with you. Sadly, they don’t ship to Canada yet, but if you’re my close friend, you can use my in box, and if you have friends Stateside, it’s worthwhile to ship to them and have them send stuff to you. Here’s why:

eSalon creates a personal profile for you based on your natural hair colour, your current hair colour and where you’d like to go with your colour. Their experienced staff custom-create a hair formula with very specific instructions and then send it off in the mail. For $20 you get salon-quality hair dye, made for you based on your profile and photo, with directions so simple my kids could follow them if we let them play with chemicals. Which we don’t.

Here’s our before photos:

And here’s our after shot:

I’ve subscribed so that every eight weeks they pop another batch of formula in the mail and I never have an excuse for roots or brassy colour. I loved the colour, and the hair dye didn’t burn my scalp or eyes, it’s not tested on animals, and it didn’t make the crazy fumes that some dyes can produce. Mama S ended up with great coverage and a very lovely ashy blonde.

Check out eSalon HERE

Let me know if you give it a shot. We were both really happy with the results. Now all I need is someone who can cut hair who lives out in this direction…

Mommy’s To-Do List – Week of July 29th

TBF1

Weekend Highlights

On Friday night the grown ups went to catch my theatre company Les Coquettes at the first show of the Toronto Burlesque Festival. My troupe closed the show with a powerhouse number by the ladies, featuring a very pregnant babe who blew everyone’s minds by climbing up and doing a stunning silks routine. Yeah, I know, my girlfriends ROCK. We got to grab a bite after with almost everyone, and I may have had just a teensy bit too much to drink. It was delightful. Please pardon the grainy iPhone photos, we snapped them on the down low.

TBF2

Saturday we returned to the city for a birthday party for the girls. Ayla is seriously missing her Toronto friends, and she was off the charts excited to be there. This gave us an opportunity to pick up a massive stack of mail from the old house, and visit with my auntie.

On Sunday Uncle Kyle came over and helped the grown-ups build our play structure. I was out of commission with a horribly stiff neck, but I was able to help prep lunch, which Khadija Mum made for my mom and brother. It was delicious and the weather was perfect yesterday. I had one of those days where I couldn’t believe I was in my own beautiful back yard.

VIP Tasks This Week

Swimming Lessons

All three of the monkeys are in swim lessons this week. I think I’ll have to rise early and get Noah fed and off for a nap before we head out, otherwise his nap falls right during class time. BAD IDEA. The girls are excited for any reason to be in the water. What’s with kids and pools?

Clear More Clutter

We need to bulldoze the garage and clear up some more space at home to get ready for the weekend barbeque and the arrival next week of our beloved English auntie and cousin. Besides, it’s almost been a month since we moved. I think it’s time to finally be settled.

What I didn’t get to last week:

G1

I need to hit the Ministry of Transportation office and write my exam. I can’t enjoy any of my in-car lessons until I have my learner’s permit, and after subjecting myself to a classroom filled with sixteen-year-olds I need to reap the benefits of my ordeal!

Personal Goals

I’ve been kind of lazy about keeping my room tidy, and I’d like to get back on track with this, especially because we have guests this weekend. In fact, I think I need to get back on track with all manner of housekeeping. Being out of the house all week has really thrown me off.

My personal reading time hasn’t really happened. At all. I’m going to try harder to carve out some more time for this.

Things to Look Forward To

Pool Time!
I love being in the water with the baby, and I’m so glad to be able to do this every day this week. We have such a lovely local pool and community centre, it’s so nice to take advantage of.

The Library!
I had a small revelation last week. I love fashion magazines, but after looking at them once, they are usually in the recycling pile. What a waste! My solution – the library! I can get the current issue of most magazines, and return it for someone else to enjoy when I’m finished. I’m going to grab a stack one of these days while we’re at the pool, because the library is in the same building.

Birthday Fun Continues!
We couldn’t find a well-rated Mexican place that was within striking distance, but Uncle Kyle tipped us off about a place in the middle of nowhere (Winona) for my birthday feast, and it’s been causing a big stir. It’s called the Memphis Fire Barbeque Company and it was seriously, seriously delicious. I feel like it’s my duty now to take any visitors to this place.

Speaking of which, on Sunday the Toronto crew arrives for a birthday camp out on our property. I’m really looking forward to hosting most of my peeps, and their little ones.

A Polyamory Primer

I’ve had Poly on my mind a lot lately. She’s in the news more often, and it seems like there are droves of people out there who like her way of thinking.

Polyamory is defined as the practice of having many, or several loves. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? More details can be found on the Wiki for those of you with a thirst for knowledge. Here’s my favourite quote from the Wiki page:

“In practice, polyamorous relationships are highly varied and individualized according to those participating. For many, such relationships are ideally built upon values of trust, loyalty, the negotiationof boundaries, and compersion, as well as overcoming jealousy, possessiveness, and the rejection of restrictive cultural standards.”

Polyamory is the umbrella under which anyone who extends their loving relationships beyond one partner falls. The various ways in which polyamory manifests are as differing and multi-layered as the unique individuals governing these hearts and bodies.

Sometimes poly people have multiple casual partners. Sometimes they have one relationship that they identify as their ‘primary’ relationship and one or more additional lovers who they keep company with. Sometimes polyamory applies to more than two people living in equitable conjugal partnership.

Poly people are everywhere, working beside you, living in your neighbourhood, and raising families. You probably don’t know about them, because until very recently, on our strange and wonderful North American continent, Polyamory was technically illegal.

Both Canadian and US laws stated that it is unlawful for more than two people to live together in a conjugal relationship. This archaic law is rarely enforced, except in the odd case of religious communities where underage marriage in polygamous communities becomes an issue. I personally find it stunning that the law can still dictate who you can sleep with and when among consenting adults. I also find it infuriating that our culture is wildly accepting of the lies, deceit, and family-crushing betrayals that many of the monogamists practice in trying to love one person “till death do they part”.

Polygamy laws were challenged in Canadian courts in 2011, and the Canadian polyamory community believed this case had real implications for poly people. The judge ruled that Polygamy law had no bearing on poly units, and that it was no longer unlawful to cohabitate with more than one conjugal partner. As I understand it, nobody is challenging the right to marital status yet – allowing more than two people to marry would really shake up marital and property law as it exists – but polyamorists believe that the law should not govern how they conduct their conjugal affairs.

Polyamory requires a serious commitment to the exploration of self, to total transparent honesty, to striving to communicate expertly with your partners, to really understanding and articulating what your boundaries are, and to respecting and understanding the boundaries of the people you are loving. Trust is absolutely the cornerstone of any polyamorous relationship – trust in yourself to be honest and open, trust in your partners to be the same. Challenging convention also takes strength, courage, and a real belief in the lifestyle you are embracing.

The Ethical Slut by Dossie Easton and Catherine A. Liszt continues to be the foremost guide to understanding polyamory. I would highly recommend it to anyone new to or considering the poly way. It’s light-hearted and straight-shooting and I’ve read my copy dozens of times over the years. There’s a link to the Amazon page for this book below, and I think it’s interesting to note that the latest edition is number two-thousand and something in sales!

Famous sex educator Tristan Taromino has also written an excellent guide to multiple-partner relationships. See links below to her book ‘Opening Up’.

I’ve also found some great Poly resources on the web:

Polyamorous Percolations is a great blog dedicated to Polyamory in the news

The Canadian Polyamory Advocacy Association is an online resource for understanding current law surrounding polyamory in Canada, and how Canadians are challenging those laws.

Modern Poly is a great resource for news, information, and fascinating personal stories by other poly people and families.

Polyamory? is an amusing and informative site dedicated to Poly FAQs.

Polyamory – Married and Dating is the compelling reality series from Showtime, now in it’s second season. Visit the site to watch episodes online.

There are also a host of warm, touching, hilarious, and practical personal blogs written by poly people who are just trying to live life in the most authentic way that they can. Today I discovered both a web-TV series about the poly lifestyle called “Family” and the very amusing blog of one of the series’ creators Matt Bullen.

As our world continues to change, as our homelands begin to really awaken to the idea of equality transcending sexual orientation I believe more and more people will come forward to share their stories and really help to shape the face of polyamory. The images of hedonistic key parties will hopefully be replaced with images of vibrant, well-rounded families that are an extension of bygone days where we lived in large, loving, supportive communities raising children and taking on life’s journey.

Meanwhile, I invite you to share your thoughts, ideas, and stories. I’d love to hear from you!
